Outdoor shelter for Mount Waverley North Primary School

LOCAL WIN!

Students at Mount Waverley North Primary School now have a new space to learn and play outside, with the completion of a fantastic new sports shelter. The new facility will provide shade and protection from the weather, as well as it being an inclusive multipurpose space accessible to all students for outdoor play and learning options.

This fantastic shelter was made possible through $200,000 in funding awarded from Round 5 of the Andrews Labor Government's Inclusive Schools Fund.

When applying for the Inclusive Schools Fund, there was significant community support for Mount Waverley North Primary School's application. In just four days, we amassed over 200 signatures.

Mount Waverley North Primary School's requested support for a new covered and resurfaced outdoor learning area to improve the accessibility they can offer all of their students and local community groups, particularly for disabled students and family members with accessibility issues.

Since the appointment of the current leadership team, headed by Principal Natalie Grieve and Assistant Principal Andrew James, the school has experienced significant enrolment growth in the previous three years which is a testament to the excellent quality education provided at the school. Recent prep enrolments have highlighted the need for better accessibility at the school, including the installation of ramps, disabled car park access, and the installation of new toilets.

Before the receiving the Inclusive Schools Fund, Mount Waverley North Primary School had no significant shade structures outside, meaning children are exposed to the weather rain, hail, or shine. The new shelter means all-year-round access for students, staff, parents, carers, and grandparents with a disability or mobility issues to attend whole school events. It would also mean a shaded and accessible place for students to play and participate in outdoor learning experiences.

I would like to acknowledge the hard work of Principal Natalie Grieve and Assistant Principal Andrew James, teachers, parents and the wider community in advocating for their students and helping me highlight the importance of this application.
